fall garden show goodies

I really restrained myself from going buck wild at the Fall Garden Show at the Botanical Garden in New Orleans last weekend and only bought the things I couldn’t live without… here are the goodies!

BSI Conference 2010… in New Orleans

The Bromeliad Society International’s World Conference will be held at the Astor Crowne Plaza in New Orleans, LA in 2010. I know this a looong time from now, but I just realized it and I guess I am a “bromeliad nerdo” because I am way excited that they chose my city to host the shindig.

protect our wetlands

A couple readers commented through blotanical and via email on a previous post that I made about not using cypress mulch.
Generally speaking, people that do not live in Louisiana just don’t realize how important it is to protect our wetlands. It isn’t a local issue… it is a national issue. Our wetlands serve as a natural barrier [...]

flooding in Monroe, LA

Here are some pictures of the bayou in Monroe, LA after the massive rainfall following Gustav that Jean from Dig, Grow, Compost, Blog mentioned in a comment on my previous post. There was some street flooding and comparing these pictures, you can see how high the water rose.

As a whole, I commend the federal, state and [...]

Hurricane Gustav is currently a tropical depression near Haiti, and it will enter the gulf tomorrow and be a major hurricane when it hits the Gulf Coast over Labor Day weekend. I have a bad feeling about this. I hope for New Orleans’ sake that this hurricane moves east, but it is so hard to tell [...]

just say “no” to cypress mulch

Please stop buying cypress mulch for your garden and find a sustainable alternative. Cypress trees grow in the swamps of Louisiana and provide a ”natural” storm protection barrier as well as necessary habitat for wildlife. Most people don’t think about where their mulch comes from when they are purchasing from a mass retailer, but here are the [...]

hey y’all!

My name is Jeanne and I have lived in the New Orleans, LA area my whole life. I grew up in nurseries and garden centers because my mother was a licensed horticulturalist, so I guess “green” runs through my blood. I love gardening and have a passion for tropical plants… especially orchids and bromeliads. Through [...]
