About...

My name is Jeanne and I have lived in the New Orleans, LA area my whole life. I grew up in nurseries and garden centers because my mother was a licensed horticulturalist, so I guess “green” runs through my blood. I love gardening and have a passion for tropical plants… especially orchids and bromeliads. Through the years, I have made some good and bad gardening choices but have learned a lot and figured I would share some of my knowledge online. I have done a lot of googling to find information on gardening topics specific to the hot and humid climate conditions in the Deep South, but they are few and far between.

New Orleans, southern Texas and most of Florida have a unique climate compared to the rest of the states … we are USDA plant hardiness zone 9a and moving toward being even hotter due to the depletion of the ozone layer. Our humidity is thick enough to cut with a knife and our summers are sweltering hot… btw, do you want to see my electricity bill? There are only a couple days a year when we have to “wrap the pipes and cover the plants” and snow is a freak occurrence here every 15 years or so, seriously… I’ve seen it twice in my life. Because of this, tropical plants that usually freeze and die in other areas thrive here almost year round.

mission statement?

Sooo… my plan with this website is to chronicle the progression some of my personal gardens in the past and present, to show you some things that worked for me down here in Nawlins… as well as to highlight other topics: how-to articles, planting recommendations, plant diseases, pests, plant care and other information… such as links that I think are cool and relevant. I was an art major in college… I love painting and photography and I am looking forward to using my camera again.

oh btw…

I am not a professional and I don’t claim to be, I’m only telling you what worked for me, no matter how “off the wall” my approach may seem lol… I hope you enjoy this blog.
