My mom and I went to the Fall Garden Show at the New Orleans Botanical Garden in City Park on Saturday. Wow… I haven’t been to the Botanical Garden since Hurricane Katrina and was shocked at how far along they are in the garden restoration, it is beautiful! We couldn’t have asked for better weather either, we had a “cool” front come in Friday night and it is actually beginning to feel like fall here, it is in the 70s!
The indoor pavillion featured Rainforest and Prehistoric exhibits (see pictures)… very well done. Another notable was the Japanese Garden and the “living wall” built out of materials you could purchase at a big box store. Ahhh the butterfly garden, I really have never seen so many butterflies in one place in my life! I was teasing my mom and telling her they let them out of boxes before the show lol. I fell in love with the staghorn ferns too.
I spoke with the gentleman from the Palm Society about my “palm possibility” to replace the crepe myrtle and he advised against it as well. He said that the Adonida Palm (Veitchia Merrillii) is too tropical and that it would do well in our climate if in a planter but will die at first frost. Bummer. He recommended a Foxtail Palm instead soooo back to the drawing board.
I will post more later today. Oh by the way, can anyone identify this plant?
Wish I could have made it! I haven’t been to city park in ages. Great pics
thank you. I hadn’t been there since before Katrina and was really surprised at how far the restoration had come on the New Orleans Botanical Garden… the sad thing though was that they had to replace all the trees leading up to the museum, it looked kinda naked. There wasn’t as many plant vendors at the show as in years past but it is good to see that it is making a comeback!
WOW, great pics! And I like the new layout too.
I am jealous of your Spanish Moss! I have a little shred I’ve kept alive for a few years, but it would fry in my trees. I am so glad to hear things are getting better over there.
Laura, I WISH that was my Spanish Moss! I thought it was kinda neat so took a picture of it in New Orleans City Park where the Garden Show was held.
